Ruff, Roads win track sectional titles
Carroll’s Hughes advances in the 110 hurdles.

Pioneer finished seventh with 40 points, Logansport was eighth with 39 and Cass was 11th with 22 at the 12-team Kokomo boys track sectional Friday. Western won with 142 points.
For the Panthers, senior Justin Ruff won the shot put with a throw of 50’7.5” and was second in the discus at 147’9”. Ryan Bice advanced to the regional in the 1600 with a third-place finish.
For the Berries, senior Brice Roads was the sectional champion in the 800 with a time of 2:00.11.
Also advancing to the regional for the Berries were Joel Konkle with a third-place finish in the shot put, Brandon Wilson with a fourth-place finish in the 400 and Kyle Overway with a fourth-place finish in the 3200.
Cass did not have an athlete advance to the regional. Derek Pullen and Jeff Plank placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 110 hurdles.
Lafayette Jeff Sectional
Carroll placed ninth with 11 points and Delphi was 11th with six points. The host Bronchos won with 158 points.
Carroll’s Andrew Hughes was the lone athlete from Carroll or Delphi to advance out of the sectional with a fourth-place finish in the 110 hurdles.
Baseball
Winamac 6, Culver 4
Ryan Abbott fanned 11 and held Culver to five hits in the Warriors’ win.
Abbott helped himself at the plate with two hits including a triple. Andrew Malott had two hits as well. Eric Sass had a two-run triple.
Winamac (4-14) travels to Tri-County today for a Midwest Conference twinbill.
Softball
Cass 3, Pioneer 0
Cass’ Amie Sites pitched a three-hit shutout as the Lady Kings (13-10) won their eighth out of the last nine contests.
Jennifer Berlet had three singles, an RBI and a run scored. Ellie Cain singled twice and Aly Small doubled.
“We seem to be playing pretty well at this moment,” Cass coach Scott Rouch said. “We’ve come together and figured out how we need to play to be successful. Hopefully it will continue.”
Earlier this week Cass defeated Northwestern 5-4 in nine innings, with Sites earning the win. Krista Weber had three singles and an RBI. Berlet had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. With the win the Kings finished their Mid-Indiana Conference slate with a 4-3 record.
Cass hosts Southern Wells for a doubleheader today.
Caston 8, North White 5
The Lady Comets (6-16, 2-5 in Midwest Conference) finished up their conference slate with a win.
Caitlin Frey earned the win in the pitchers’ circle, allowing four hits while striking out five. She helped herself at the plate with two hits including a double. Erica Zartman singled twice.
Shelby Loeffler, Emily See, Chelsea Sivits and Mariah Moss added RBIs for Caston.
Frey and Christine Rentschler were honored on the night for senior night.
On Thursday Caston was defeated at Class A No. 3 Frontier 9-3. Frey allowed five earned runs on five hits in six innings, striking out six.
See had an RBI double and Loeffler doubled as well. Rentschler had two hits and an RBI.
Caston hosts a tournament today with Culver, Argos and Tippecanoe Valley participating.
Logansport 2, Zionsville 1 (JV)
With the varsity seniors being honored before the game for senior night due to the varsity game being canceled, the Lady Berries’ JV followed up with a win.
Sarah Lowry fanned five in a complete-game win. Kirsten Keay and Allison Evanich both had two hits in the contest, and Evanich added an RBI.
Logan (16-3) competes in the Twin Lakes JV Invitational today.
