The 35th-annual IHSAA girls track and field tournament gets fully underway tonight with sectionals taking place across the state.

Individuals and relay teams that place in the top four advance to the regional level to be held next week.

Logansport, Pioneer and Lewis Cass participate in the Madison-Grant Sectional which begins at 5 p.m.

Logan coach Randy Kuhn said Kokomo enters as the favorite.

“I don’t think we’re strong enough to beat Kokomo, but we’ll try to get as many girls as possible to advance,” Kuhn said. “We’ve got a bunch of young girls. We’ll try to see how many we can get through.”

Carroll and Delphi compete at the Lafayette Jeff Sectional beginning at 5:30 p.m.

“It’s definitely a challenge competing against the Lafayette schools,” Delphi coach John Gasser said. “We have a couple good chances to place. If things work out we’ll have two or three individuals advance to the regional.

“We’ve got a real good chance in the high jump. Olivia George is seeded second.”

Caston competes at the Rochester Sectional beginning at 5:30 p.m.

“Kayley Woods is seeded third in the 800 right behind the Plymouth girl,” Caston coach Tara Wolfe said. “She’ll be able to advance I’m hoping.”

Winamac participates in the Kankakee Valley Sectional starting at 5:45 p.m.

“In state tournaments without any class sizes there’s always a lot of competition,” Winamac coach Adam Bennett said. “We’re getting the girls geared up and trying to get as many to the regional as we can. We have a few seeded in the top four. Tabby Halleck is in the 100 and the 200. Ali Parks is the No. 1 seed in the shot put.”
