Bullard finishes runner-up in sectional

Carroll girls tennis team edges Delphi 3-2.

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Logansport senior Brittany Bullard placed runner-up in the sectional pole vault competition held at Kokomo Monday.

The event was held at Kokomo due to sectional-host Madison-Grant not having a pole vault station.

Bullard recorded a season-best vault of 10’3” to tie Western’s Nikki McCracken for the best mark of the sectional, but McCracken won due to having less misses on the night.

“I was happy about getting a PR on the season,” said Bullard, who entered as the two-time defending sectional champion. “Obviously I would have liked to have won it, but I’m happy I’m going into the regional with my best vault of the season.”

Bullard will compete in the pole vault competition at the Bremen Regional on Tuesday, May 20.

David Watterson led the Kings with a 40. Kalen Linback shot a 51, Ryan Aldridge 55 and Kiley Johnson 57.

Softball

Cass 9, Peru 4

The Lady Kings won a Mid-Indiana Conference game on the road to improve to 11-10 and 3-3.

Amie Sites held the Lady Tigers to two runs in six innings to move to 11-9 on the year.

For Cass at the plate, Molly Naphew had three hits including a double. Taylor DeHaven and Jennifer Berlet both had two hits including doubles. Peyton Klinkhamer and Leandra Baber both had two hits as well.

“We started really slow but in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings we really pounded the ball pretty good,” Cass coach Scott Rouch said. “We made a good adjustment to their pitcher.”

Rouch added he’s happy with how his squad is playing. In the last week the Kings have beaten Class 2A No. 1 Indianapolis Scecina and No. 2 Eastern.

“We’ve proved we can play with people,” Rouch said. “We’ve been playing a lot better lately. We’ve had no errors the last few games.”

Cass travels to MIC foe Northwestern tonight.

Winamac 8, Tri-County 1

The Lady Warriors (18-8, 6-1 in Midwest Conference) secured at least a second-place finish in the MWC with the win.

Whitlee Scott held the Cavaliers to a run on three hits to improve to 9-2.

Cortney Brandt went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs to lead Winamac at the plate. Scott, Rachel Younger and Kayla Parish each two base hits in the contest.

“I was pleased with the way our bottom half of the order hit the ball,” Winamac coach Jennifer Belcher said. “We haven’t had a game like that in a while where our bottom half came through for us. They all did that tonight.”

Winamac hosts rival North Judson Wednesday for its regular-season finale.

Logansport 10, Maconaquah 0 (JV)

Sarah Lowry pitched a no-hitter, striking out five for the JV Lady Berries (15-2).

Alysia Lewellen had three singles in the contest. Morgan Smith, MacKenzie Whiteman and Allison Evanich all added a pair of RBIs.

Logan travels to Lewis Cass tonight.

Baseball

Twin Lakes 13, Winamac 8

The Warriors fell to 3-13 with the loss on the road.

Evan Bonnell hit a three-run double for Winamac. Andrew Malott had two hits and two RBIs. Matt Reinholt had a double and two RBIs.

“Get rid of that first inning and a third and we were right with ‘em,” Winamac coach Mark Hendryx said. “We came out real flat. I don’t know if that was a residual effect from Friday (against West Central) because those were two games the boys knew they should have won.

“Right now we’re having one bad inning that really hurts us. If we ever find a way to play seven good innings we’ll be really good.”

The Warriors host Rensselaer tonight with a 6 p.m. start time.

Logansport 11, Twin Lakes 5 (JV)

Alec Ely allowed three earned runs in six innings for the JV Berries (16-5).

Chris Titus had three hits, including a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored. Evan Clem added three singles.
