IEDC president tours local businesses

Local companies offer IEDC president tours of facilities.

A portion of Eric Doden’s day in Logansport on Monday was spent touring Cole Hardwood and ABC Metals/HTI.

The president of the Indiana Economic Development Corp. said he has had similar meetings with 77 businesses in Indiana in hopes of developing strong relationships.

“The businesses are customers, and I’m trying to see how we can improve or change things so they can grow,” Doden said.

Dan Kendall, president, said ABC Metals is a distributor of aluminum, brass and copper rolled products. It has customers in North America and Asia.

Celebrating its 40th year in business, it has three locations, 500 W. Clinton St., Logansport; El Paso, Texas; and Pharr, Texas. Kendall said the business needs continued support via Indiana incentives with training and tax abatements.

The company received a tax abatement in 2011 for a 12,000-square-foot expansion. Kendall said they are thankful for the support, but are seeking opportunities to expand volume and employment base.

“There is a desire to expand to respond to increasing dimensional demands from customers, which requires larger, more precise equipment,” Kendall said. “Also to respond to increased demand for product.”

Kendall explained by saying an owner of a small store with small shelves will run out of materials quicker and will not have the space to bring in larger equipment. Having a bigger area with room for expansion will allow business to expand.

Kendall said he would also like to see increased opportunities for young people who are seeking a career in skilled trades, but don’t have to have a four-year degree. He said sometimes they are challenged to hire people from an educational standpoint.

Born and raised in Indiana, Kendall also said he was happy to have Doden visit.

“He is representing the state’s active efforts to support businesses in Indiana,” Kendall said. “I think it’s good. We want to stay in Indiana.”
