LOGANSPORT — “The Dancers” statue in Logansport’s pocket park near Third and Market streets have another reason to waltz as the Indiana Main Street organization picked Logansport as the recipient of the 2012

Indiana Main Street Design of Downtown Public Improvements Award.

The Market Street Pocket Park and the statue were nominated by Logan’s Landing for the award, which will be presented to community leaders and supporters at the Indiana Main Street Conference in Kokomo Thursday.

“It really kind of validates the vision that a lot of people have,” said Becki Harris, executive director of Logan’s Landing. She credited the leadership of Pam Leeman and Kathy Dingo, and vendors, donors and supporters of “Dancing with Our Stars” for designing and funding the award-winning idea.

“They are the ones who took the idea from an abstract concept and turned it into a reality,” Harris said.

Leeman said it’s an award the city should be proud of.

“This is really just a huge award for our city,” she said. “The efforts that Kathy and I have made in the last three years have really all come about because of ‘Dancing with Our Stars’ and those who supported it.”

The Dancers and the pocket park were part of an effort downtown advocates have been working on to create an Arts and Design District. Harris said the location was perfect because it is located at a southern and eastern entrance to the city.

Dingo said the exclusivity of the award — Logansport being the only winner this year — makes it truly special.

“It truly is a great recognition to receive,” she said. “This is a huge award.” Harris encourages Logansport and Cass County residents to attend the awards ceremony and show community support. The awards ceremony is at 11 a.m. Thursday in City Council chambers at Kokomo City Hall.

There is no charge to attend the awards ceremony; those wishing to stay for the luncheon afterwards will need to register by calling the Greater Kokomo Economic Development Alliance at 765-457-5301.

The cost of the luncheon is $25.Logan’s Landing is a nationally accredited Main Street Community.
