---- — Cass County will receive $6,373 from the federal government’s emergency food and shelter program.
Cass County has been granted funds through the federal program for the past several years, according to Joyce Mayhill, executive director of United Way of Cass County.
The United Way of Cass County facilitates dispersing the local grant funds. Last year Cass County received $5,063.
The money previously went to Logansport Salvation Army, Emmaus Mission Center, Walton food pantry and Our Daily Bread food pantry. The process begins anew each year, Mayhill said, so organizations are not guaranteed to receive the money again.
The program awards funds to counties based on criteria such as population and unemployment rate, Mayhill said.
Local organizations will be able to apply for emergency food and shelter program funds until Jan. 2.
The county was selected by national board chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency with representatives including The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Catholic Charities and others.
A local board has to be put in place to select which organizations will receive the funds. The local board has to mimic the national board with representatives from the same organizations represented on the national board, Mayhill said.
The program not only gives assistance with additional funding, but provides an organization the means to help others, Mayhill said.
Local organizations applying for a portion of the funding must be private nonprofits or units of government, have an accounting system, maintain nondiscriminatory practices and have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency goods or shelter programs, according to a press release.
Organizations meeting the requirements are required to submit a letter of request addressing the requirements, amount requested and program description. Letters should be mailed or dropped off by noon Jan. 2 at the United Way of Cass County, 401 E. Broadway, Logansport.
