Community happenings: Deer Creek events, International Festival, end-of-summer bash

---- — Event planned at Deer Creek

CAMDEN — Several events are planned in the coming months at the Deer Creek Community Center, 4583 N. Ind. 29, Camden.

A Neighborhood Watch meeting will be 7 p.m. Sept. 11. Scams and other con-artist problems will be discussed.

A Chicken Bash and Bake Sale will be 4:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 16. The cost will be $8.50 for adults and $4 for children under 12. Tickets will be available starting Sept. 24 and can be obtained from board members and at TC’s Store in Deer Creek.

On Nov. 1, there will be bingo for prizes. The cost is $15 for 20 and light refreshments will be served.

International Festival coming to Monticello

MONTICELLO — The Monticello-Union Township Public Library will host an International Festival from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14. Monticello is home to people from all over the world, including Mexico, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Japan, China, India and the Philippines.

For this reason, the library is offering residents a chance to enjoy and share the cultures of their most recent immigrants.

Food from Mexico, Puerto Rico, China, Poland, and Thailand will be available for purchase. Proceeds from all sales will go toward funding adult programming for the year. Included in the festivities will be demonstrations of origami and reproductions of work by Spanish artists Salvador Dali and Diego Rivera. Entertainment will include music and dancing. There will also be activities for children to make their own cultural crafts and to break pinatas.

End-of-summer event benefits MDA

GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE — “Making Music, Memories and Muscles,” an end-of-summer bash to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, is planned for Sept. 21 in ABC Hi-Def Communications in Peru.

The band Barefoot Murphy will perform at 6:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. by Outback Steakhouse. Elite Banquet Facility will provide a cash bar.

Tickets are $40 per person and must be purchased by Sept. 7. Tickets are available at Palmer’s Jewelry, Lux Boutique, Stella’s Bar, The Elbow Room and Apple Tree Realty, all in Kokomo.

There will be a motorcycle ride that will end at the event, and motorcyclists must purchase a ticket to participate in the ride. There will be a raffle of items, including autographed sports items, a shotgun, spa package and Harley-Davidson merchandise.
