History exhibit coming to Logansport

Ivy Tech exhibit will show reproductions of historical documents.

Ever wanted to see the Declaration of Independence or manuscript letters from the likes of George Washington and type-written speeches from Martin Luther King Jr. and others?

Those who visit Ivy Tech Logansport from September to October will be able to view reproductions like these in the traveling exhibition “Freedom: A History of U.S.” Other reproductions will include the Constitution, the Emancipation Proclamation, manuscripts letters from Frederick Douglass and type-written speeches from FDR.

The exhibit will be open at the Logansport campus from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays from Sept. 13 to Oct. 14.

The traveling exhibition has 48 freestanding panels and six thematic sections including The Founding Era; Young Republic; The Nation Dividing; The Firebell in the Night; The Union Threatened: The Union Preserved; Emancipation and Epilogue. A few highlights of the exhibition, included in a press release, are Lincoln’s handwritten notes of speeches and letters by leading figures including Susan B. Anthony.

The Indiana Historical Society Traveling Exhibition Program allows smaller historical societies and museums in Indiana the opportunity to showcase the exhibit.

Judge Julian Ridlen, former Indiana state treasurer, said he would be interested in seeing the exhibit.

“As a lover of history for a lifetime, I fail to see how these documents wouldn’t be important to us as Cass County residents,” Ridlen said. “It sounds like a fascinating exhibit and should involve the entire community.”

Ridlen said he and his wife, Sue, were in Washington in August 1963 when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. Ridlen said he hoped the document will be in this exhibit.

Freedom documents and illustrates the importance of people and events that trace the evolving principle of freedom from the nation’s founding until 1968, a press release said. The exhibition invites visitors to read the words and see the images of men and women who, arrived in this land by choice or in chains and forged the nation.
