---- — Board members of the Cass County 4-H Fair are hoping to sell a few hundred more tickets for this week’s country music concert featuring performers Thomas Rhett and Dustin Lynch.
Close to 1,000 tickets had been sold for the concert as of the most recent count early last week, according to board member Alan Liming. The show starts at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Gates for the concert open at 6:30 p.m.
“We want to bring people into Cass County and show them what the Cass County Fair is like,” Liming said.
Liming said enticing visitors was one of the major reasons the fair board decided to launch what is hoped to become an annual highlight at the fair.
“We noticed last year that we heard from a lot of the businesses that after the concert was over there was a rush of people, maybe out of county, that wanted to grab something to eat before heading back home,” Liming said.
“We’re trying to bring people out of Cass County in. It’s people out of Cass County that don’t know what we have to offer.”
Board members hope to break even on the concert, which would mean selling approximately 1,600 tickets, Liming said.
Tickets are available online through casscofair.com until 6 p.m. Wednesday for $23 apiece. They may be purchased at the Cass County Fairgrounds office this year, too, a change from the inaugural concert in 2012.
Parking and fair entry are free.
Ticket sales are down slightly compared to this time last year, Liming said. He attributed the dip in part to a nationwide trend and partly to the youth of the performers.
The fair board’s booking agent has informed board members that ticket sales are down across the board, “whether you’re a No. 1 artist” or an up-and-coming one, Liming said.
“He said that’s just kind of the way that business runs,” said Liming. “Some years you do really good and other years it’s hard to get people to come out and buy the ticket.”
As the county enters its second year with a headlining concert at the fair, Liming said he anticipates making the concert an annual fair tradition.
“Just come and enjoy,” Liming said. “That’s what it’s all about, to have a little family time when everybody can get together and have some fun.”
