Tire collection program continues with success

Directors says program is convenient as well as economical for residents

---- — Cass County’s residential tire collection program is continuing with positive results, the director of the county’s solid waste management district says.

The Cass County Solid Waste Management District Board made the decision to create the program last year to replace the county’s tire amnesty day. The event gave residents a three-hour window on one day a year to bring in their tires for recycling.

Bob Ehle, director of the district, said the new five-day-a-week collection program available by appointment through the end of July or the beginning of August is far more convenient for residents looking to get rid of their tires.

“That way people can just call and make an appointment and we can take care of them,” Ehle said, adding that it especially helps out farmers who may not have been able to attend the tire amnesty day in the past.

Leffler Tires of Peru provides the semi-trailer on the loading dock of the solid waste management district’s warehouse on High Street. Ehle said it took just more than a week to fill the first trailer and the second has already collected about 30 tires. He added people from all over Cass County have been bringing in their lawnmower, car and semi tires.

The district collected three semi trailers full of tires last year, Ehle said.

“The way the program has taken off this year, I wouldn’t be surprised if we surpass that total,” he continued.

Ehle said when tires are recycled, the material can be used in highway projects and for playground equipment.

“It’s not only the right thing to do,” he said, “it’s economical.”

There is no charge for the first 10 car tires. Each car tire after that is $2. Semi tires are $5 each and tractor tires are $15 for the first four and $30 for tractor tires five through 10.

The program is open to all Cass County residents. To make an appointment to drop off tires at the district’s warehouse, call 574-732-9253.
