A new deputy prosecutor has joined the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office.
Joseph Thieke, a graduate of Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, started Jan. 2 to fill a vacancy left by former deputy prosecutor Andrew Achey. The prosecutor’s office is still looking to fill a state-paid prosecutor’s position.
Thieke grew up in Cass County and attended Lewis Cass Junior-Senior High School before completing an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice at Indiana University-Kokomo in Dec. 2008. He was admitted to the bar in October 2011.
He will be working primarily with misdemeanor cases in Cass Superior Court II. Cass County Prosecutor Kevin Enyeart said he will also be on call to handle arrests.
“He’ll be working in all facets of the office,” Enyeart said.
Two vacancies were left in the office when Achey and fellow deputy prosecutor Lindsay Ruby left the positions to become public defenders.
During interviews, Enyeart said he had narrowed it down to three candidates and ultimately chose Thieke because of his background in criminal justice and his personality.
“Joe stood out first and foremost because he’s a personable and intelligent young man who has a passion for prosecution,” Enyeart said.
Enyeart said he was also glad to find someone local.
Thieke said he always had the goal of becoming a prosecuting attorney and was glad to find an opening in near his home.
“I love it,” Thieke said. “I think it’s going to be right up my alley.”
So far, Thieke said it’s been busy in the office. Enyeart said prosecutors are taking on some extra work as they continue to conduct interview for the second position.
“We are thoroughly vetting and looking for them across the state,” Enyeart said.
The prosecutor would handle high-level felony cases in all three courts. The open position is the third highest in the office, Enyeart said.
While they’re taking some time to look for the new prosecutor, Enyeart said his office is hoping to have a new hire soon.
“We need to get back to full force again,” Enyeart said.
