2 teens killed in Carroll County crash

---- — A 17-year-old Cutler teen and his 14-year-old passenger were killed Thursday in Carroll County.

Police were called just before 5:30 p.m. to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of U.S. 421 and 300 South, approximately 6 miles south of Delphi.

Police say Christopher Mummert, 17, was driving at 1996 Chevrolet Lumina eastbound on 300 South, west of the intersection with U.S. 421. Hunter Walker, 14, Flora, was the sole passenger in Mummert’s vehicle.

For reasons unknown, Mummert drove through the intersection without stopping and yielding to the northbound semi-tractor/trailer combination. The intersection is posted with stop signs for westbound and eastbound traffic on 300 South to stop at the intersection with U.S. 421.

Sukhminder Karda, 48, Ontario, Canada, was northbound on U.S. 421, approaching the intersection from the south. Karda was driving a 2006 Volvo semi-tractor, pulling an empty box trailer. Karda did not have time to slow or even brake, according witness statements at the scene because the eastbound vehicle made no apparent effort to stop.

Police believe Mummert and Walker were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Karda was wearing his seatbelt. Carroll County authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor, however toxicology reports are pending. Further investigation is being conducted by Carroll Coroner J.D. Cree and the sheriff department.

Responding at the scene were the Carroll County Sheriff Department, Delphi Tri-Township Fire Territory, and Carroll County EMS.
