Texting possibly factored into fatal Friday crash

Sherrif: Reason unknown, but texting may have been factor

A Friday morning crash sent the Logansport area into mourning after the death of a young driver involved in the collision.

A 17-year-old Lewis Cass High School student, Lauren N. Bashore, Peru, lost her life in a crash on Logansport Road east of Logansport, police indicate.

Lauren was driving east in a 2005 silver Chrysler van on Logansport Road just east of Old Ind. 24 at approximately 8:25 a.m. Friday, according to the Cass County Sheriff's Department.

For unknown reasons, Lauren went left of center, hitting a westbound 2011 Isuzu straight truck driven by Kevin P. Thompson, 60, Marion.

"We know sometime prior to the crash she had been texting," Sheriff Randy Pryor said.

Cass County Dispatch had received a call earlier Friday morning that the silver Chrysler minivan had been seen driving erratically near Yorktown Road, Pryor added.

Officers could not determine whether she had been texting at the time of the crash, he said, "but it could be a contributing circumstance."

Lauren had to be extricated from her vehicle and died at the scene, Pryor said.

The force of the collision spun the van around and came to a stop facing west about 100 yards away from the truck, which went into a ditch. The van suffered significant damage, while the truck only saw minor damage.

Pryor said Thompson complained of shoulder pain and was transported to Logansport Memorial Hospital.

New Waverly Fire Department, the Cass County Coroner, Rural Metro Ambulance and the sheriff's department responded to the crash.

Lauren was to be a senior this year at Lewis Cass Jr.-Sr. High School. Daughter of Vohne Liche Kennels proprietors Ken Licklider and Amanda Bashore, she was heavily involved in FFA.

Counselors and clergy members will be available from 2 to approximately 4 p.m. Sunday at Lewis Cass High School, 6422 E. Ind. 218 in Walton, to assist students and others mourning Lauren's death.
