Sprint cell phone customers and subscribers to some prepaid and pay-as-you-go cellular services have seen greatly reduced cell signal since Friday morning in Logansport while repairs to a tower near Dykeman Park are under way, a spokeswoman for Sprint said.
The tower at 414 Northern Ave. has a back haul issue, said Jennifer Sniderman, spokeswoman for Sprint’s Indiana region.
“It basically makes the connectivity go from terrestrial to cellular,” Sniderman explained. Fiber-optic technology is usually a component of a back haul setup, she said.
The near-outage has limited cell service indoors and in some outdoor areas for Sprint customers near the tower as well as Sprint As You Go subscribers and subscribers to Boost, Virgin Mobile and Assurance Wireless prepaid services.
A local telecommunications company is working on the repairs, Sniderman added. However, “they can’t tell us exactly when the repairs are going to be done,” she said.
“We’re seeing that they’re updating as quickly as they can.”
Posts from Virgin Mobile technical assistants on the service’s official Facebook page indicated cell service might be restored to normal starting around 1 p.m. today, an estimate based on repairs that have been completed and still remain to be done.
Sniderman could not describe the exact nature of the back haul issue. In some cases, construction work nearby may cut a fiber feeding the tower, she said, but there was no indication whether that had anything to do with Logansport’s tower.
