Two injured in Miami Co. crash

Police: Seat belts would have saved some hurt.

MEXICO — A driver and her passenger were sent to the hospital after their vehicle collided with another early Thursday morning.

At about 7:24 a.m. Thursday, officers from the Indiana State Police and the Miami County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two-vehicle crash near 2450 N. Eel River Cemetery Road in Miami County, according to a press release from the ISP.

The preliminary crash investigation by Indiana State Police Sergeant Rick Brown indicates that Tina McGee, 29, Peru, was driving a 1985 Chevrolet Blazer southbound on the northbound side of Eel River Cemetery Road. McGee and her passenger, husband Robin McGee, 26, Peru, were delivering newspapers. Cassie Brooks, 34, Peru, was driving a 2012 Dodge Charger northbound on Eel River Cemetery Road. The Dodge crested a hill and hit the Chevrolet head-on while that vehicle was on the wrong side of the road.

Tina McGee and Robin McGee were transported by ambulance to Dukes Memorial Hospital. Tina had a complaint of pain to her face and chest. Robin was later flown by Samaritan Helicopter to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne with a chest injury.

Neither of the McGees was wearing a seat belt which Sergeant Brown believes would have prevented or reduced their injuries.

Neither Brooks nor her two passengers, children ages 6 and 3, were injured. They were all properly restrained with a seat belt or child safety seat. Sergeant Brown believes the safety restraints aided in the trio not being injured.

This is an ongoing investigation, but as of Thursday evening neither the use of alcohol nor narcotics is suspected as having contributed to the crash.

Sergeant Brown was assisted at the crash scene by Trooper Daniel Prus, Miami County Sheriff’s Deputy Cassy Baily, Miami County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Cattin, the Mexico Fire Department and Dukes Hospital EMS.

NOTE: This is an updated version. An earlier version of this story misidentified Tina McGee's male passenger, Robin McGee.
