NEW WAVERLY – A single-vehicle crash claimed the life of Mara Petty, 61, Logansport, this morning.
The crash occurred at 9:37 a.m. on 950 East in New Waverly. A preliminary crash investigation indicates Petty was driving a 2003 Pontiac southbound on 950 East, south of Church Road. The Pontiac rolled onto its top after traveling into the ditch for unknown reasons, according to a press release.
Petty was pronounced dead at the scene by Cass County Coroner Randy Rozzi. The state police believe Petty had a medical episode prior to the crash.
During the response to the fatal car crash, another car crash occurred at 1100 East on Logansport Road.
Walton Deputy Town Marshal Jeffery Packard, 38, Galveston, was southbound on 1100 East when he reportedly failed to yield to cross traffic at the intersection of Logansport Road, according to a preliminary crash investigation.
The semi-marked 2010 Dodge Charger police vehicle that had emergency lights activated entered the intersection and was struck by a westbound 1999 Saturn passenger car driven by Jeremy Hendricks, 30, Peru.
Hendricks didn't see the police car prior to the crash, the press release said.
Packard and Hendricks were taken to Dukes Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Both crashes are still under investigation, but the use of alcohol and narcotics is not suspected as contributing to either crash. All people involved in each crash were reported to be wearing seat belts.
Officers from Indiana State Police and Cass County Sheriff’s Department responded. New Waverly Fire Department, Dukes Hospital EMS and Rural Metro Ambulance Service also assisted.
