YOUNG AMERICA — Galveston Fire Department volunteers and local farmers worked Wednesday to round up pigs that were running free following a morning accident in which a semi tractor and trailer overturned on Ind. 18 near Young America Wednesday.

A call came in around 10:40 a.m. alerting the Cass County Sheriff's Department that a 2003 Peterbilt semi, driven by Chad Folkens, Iowa, was overturned. While going around a curve on Ind. 18, a mechanical malfunction plus weight shifting rolled the semi, which ended up on the north side of the road.

Folkens was not injured. Of the 300 pigs on the semi, 100 were loaded up with the help of local farmers with trailers, and hauled to Burlington. About 200 pigs died in the accident.

Volunteers from Galveston and Young America fire departments responded to the scene along with the Cass County Sheriff's Department and Galveston Police Department.
