Science camp teaches physics through rubber duckies

---- — Ready. Set. Launch!

The 44 children attending Camp Invention this week at Thompson Elementary School in Walton spent part of their time piecing together catapults to launch rubber ducks to their target — and at the same time, learned a little bit about physics.

The weeklong program, put on by nonprofit Invent Now Inc., tries to engage children to discover their innate creativity and inventiveness through hands-on science, technology, engineering and math projects.

And engage they did.

“It’s an exciting week,” said Cindy Leduc, local coordinator for the camp. “I had parents telling me that their kids were a little apprehensive, especially the older kids, on Monday, but they have been eager to come back.

The program wraps up its seventh year at Thompson today. Leduc said it’s likely to make a return trip.

“Look out for us next year,” she said, “and join us.”
