Bobbi Benish loves wearing scarves in stylish knots. Her problem? The knots kept falling out.
That’s what the Logansport native set out to solve with a modified scarf she developed, called the Easy-Style Lotus Scarf. It’s also the latest addition to the QVC Sprouts program, an arm of the QVC television shopping network designed to help small-time entrepreneurs put their products before QVC’s large audience.
Sales from QVC, a 27-year-old television shopping network that broadcasts around the clock, generated $8.6 billion in revenues in 2013, according to the network’s website. A sizeable portion — $3.2 billion — came from e-commerce.
Benish, who now lives in Bedford, incorporated a fabric loop in the middle of a scarf to hold knots in place. She developed it in December after tying a tie in front of an office mirror and deciding something similar to a tie loop would help a scarf, too.
The modified scarf was recently put to a vote on the QVC Sprouts website along with two other items, just one of which would make it to the point of being sold from the QVC online catalog.
“If my scarf could get on their website and sell successfully, it could change the rest of my life,” Benish said two days before voting ended. “They’re just that big a footprint in the retail market.”
Voting ended Thursday and Benish’s scarf won. The total number of votes was not disclosed, Benish said.
The next step? The scarf is sold from the QVC website, and if it sells well enough — a criterion that isn’t specifically defined, but is considered case by case, Benish said — it may land a spot on the TV show itself.
“The sprouts program is really a great foot in the door to QVC for people like myself — I don’t have a huge company behind me,” Benish said.
The scarf is called a “ZenSity Lotus Loop Easy-Style Chiffon Scarf” on QVC. It’s also available from Benish’s website, ZenSity.com.
