---- — The arts are alive and well in Winamac, and Psi Iota Xi is on a mission to prove it.

The sorority’s annual Celebrating the Arts event will be a showcase for the talents of the community, said Leeann Wright, sorority member and event chairwoman.

“This is our way of doing outreach to our community,” Wright said. “We want to engage them in celebrating our local talent.”

As part of that outreach, event organizers invited local students to submit their artwork to be on display during Saturday’s event at Church of the Heartland, 890 E. Ind. 14, Winamac. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Stacy Bogan will return as the event’s featured artist. Though Bogan’s landscapes and still-life drawings fill her gallery home, “Something Special” in Lafayette, she’ll bring her quick-sketch talents to the Pulaski County event. Bogan’s sketches aim to capture the personality of the subject and are completed in 15 minutes.

But it’s the performing arts that will take center stage this year, Wright said. The Noah Ginex Puppet Co. will be featured during the event. The company’s puppets have been featured in the music video “Pollywog in a Bog” from The Barenaked Ladies’ children album.

The puppeteer will give two performances on Saturday — at noon and 1 p.m. — and will also interact with the crowd throughout the day. The audience will also have a chance to get in on the act by creating their own sock puppet at one of the many arts and crafts tables that will be available during the event.

“People may discover the artist in themselves,” Wright said of the Art Tables planned for Saturday.

Rounding out the performing arts will be the Eastern Pulaski Express Choir, “Miss Emily’s Ballerinas” and the Pulaski County Extension Chords. They will perform at 11:15 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.

The event is also meant to benefit the sorority’s mission of supporting speech and hearing clinics during the summer. The group provides scholarships so that children don’t have to go without needed therapy and support during the months school is out of session.

Admission to the event is free, but the group welcomes donations to support this mission. For more information, contact the sorority at celebratingthearts@gmail.com
