PERU — A semi accident Thursday morning left more than 250 baby pigs dead.
Miami County Sheriff Tim Miller said a semi driver hauling around 750 piglets was delivering the load to Maple Acres farm in Howard County when he drove onto the shoulder of 50 West in Miami County.
Due to the wet ground, Miller said the semi was pulled off the road, which shifted the load of pigs and flipped the trailer onto its side.
More than 250 piglets were killed in the accident. Miller said many of the animals likely suffocated to death.
A rendering truck was deployed to the scene to clean up the carcasses, he said.
The driver of the semi was uninjured.
