---- — WALTON — A local woman is venturing back into the landscaping industry after about a decade spent raising her children.

Valerie Young, who formerly operated Kelly Creek Landscaping in Logansport, recently launched Young’s LawnScape based in Walton, a new landscape design, installation and maintenance service.

The business builds on an interest she’s cultivated for many years. After graduating from Lewis Cass Jr.-Sr. High School in 1991, she earned an associate degree in horticulture from Vincennes University in 1993 and launched Kelly Creek that year.

She operated Kelly Creek for about a decade before closing it in the early 2000s to focus more time on raising her children, which are now school-age.

While Kelly Creek was also a greenhouse and nursery, Young’s new business will not include those elements, she said. She’ll be the only full-time employee, though she may take on a couple of seasonal employees once summer begins.

Young can be reached at 765-480-6897.

PEDIATRICIAN JOINS LMH NETWORK

Logansport Memorial Hospital has added a fourth pediatrician to its network.

Dr. Oluyemisi Akintunde, a pediatrician certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, recently began practicing in the pediatrics suite at Medical Office Building West at Logansport Memorial Hospital.

She holds a medical degree from the University of Ilorin in Kwara Nigeria, and completed a residency in pediatrics at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta as well as an internship with Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

DOLLAR GENERAL SETTLING IN ON SOUTH SIDE

A spokeswoman for Dollar General’s corporate offices indicated locals have welcomed the new Dollar General that opened this winter on Logansport’s south side.

“The store’s been pretty well received by the community and we’re excited about the opening,” Crystal Ghassemi said. The store’s soft opening took place Feb. 13 and its grand opening was around the beginning of March.

Ghassemi also indicated Dawn Gainey is the new store manager and a total of seven full- and part-time employees now work there. The number of employees may fluctuate somewhat depending on the needs of the store at any given time, she said.
