Free food, rides, fun and a special visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be available at the Cass County Dentzel Carousel from 1 to 4 p.m. this Sunday.
Every year, the non-profit organization that takes care of the carousel has a Winterfest celebration on the first Sunday of December. The event offers free rides, refreshments and a chance to win a basket of prizes. This year’s event is being sponsored by Myers Spring.
People who attend the event can buy raffle tickets for $1 for a chance to win a basket created and donated by one of the board members.
Susan Hicks, office manager of the Cass County Carousel, said about 100 children attended the event last year.
“Kids will be wrapped around the side of the carousel waiting for a ride,” she said.
Along with the free carousel rides, there will be cookies and punch and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus at 2 p.m., Hicks said.
“Besides being able to connect to the community and bring awareness to what we have here, this event is a chance for us to give back to the community,” Hicks said. “With us being a non-profit organization made of volunteers, it is the community that supports us.”
Logansport Fire Chief Mark Strong, a Cass County Carousel board member, hopes to be at Winterfest on Sunday.
“It’s a really neat event,” Strong said. “The carousel will be lit up with Christmas decorations and there will be lot of fun things going on.”
Strong said he enjoyed the carousel as a child and then took his children to the carousel when they were growing up. Now, he’s able to take his grandchildren.
Hicks said such stories are common.
The Cass County Dentzel Carousel is the only national landmark in Cass County, Hicks said.
“To keep this going is something we should all be proud of,” Hicks said. “We wouldn’t be here without the community. They play a vital role, whether business or organization, to keep the carousel.”
Hicks is in the office from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Hicks said she has been known to turn on the carousel for visitors who leave a donation. Residents can stop in or call at 574-753-8725.
