FLORA — Carroll Consolidated School Corporation board members voted Monday to award Lafayette contractor J.R. Kelly Company the bid for its upcoming science classroom renovations.

J.R. Kelly’s bid of $1,861,165, covering most of the school’s anticipated renovations and additional equipment, was accepted at a board meeting Monday night.

The bid covers the work involved in converting four existing junior and senior high science classrooms into two larger classrooms, adding on two more large classrooms and updating the physics lab.

J.R. Kelly bid to delete some projection screens, moveable marker boards, additional cord reels and portable hoods and fume chambers from the equipment to be installed.

“Right now we’re not going to have them,” said Chris Lagoni, Carroll school superintendent. However, in a couple of years the school might add the projection screens and other equipment separately, he said.

The new classrooms as bid will still include technology to allow teachers to show digital slideshows at the front of the class, he added, despite the omission of the projection screens.

Associates from Envoy, the project management company for the school, and Barton Coe Vilamaa, the architecture firm, are working with J.R. Kelly representatives now to figure out the materials and a possible start date, said Lagoni.

“We want to start as soon as we can,” he reiterated. That could be as soon as March if the weather permits, he said.

Lagoni has said in the past that the school will finance the renovations out of a bond issue passed about two years ago, so the project should be paid off this summer.

The renovations should give teachers space to prepare students for the workforce based on coming Common Core standards.
