Fiveplex dubbed Mary Max Cinemas Logansport 5

Movie theater veteran named general manager.

WALTON — Richard Dieffenbach has been named the general manager of Mary Max Cinemas Logansport 5, the 16,000-square-foot multiplex being built between High Street and Lexington Road.

Bill Hawes, a manager with Logansport Theater LLC, said Dieffenbach is a longtime veteran of the Indiana movie theater industry.

“Dieffenbach is well respected in the movie-theater business. We sought him out for the general manager role,” Hawes said. “He has managed theaters of this scale in communities similar to Logansport and had success.”

Dieffenbach, who is from Buffalo, N.Y. and now lives in Flora, said he is looking forward to the position.

“I love opening theaters. I’ve opened quite a few theaters and each one had a different vibe,” Dieffenbach said. “I hope this theater is well-received in the community.”

The theater has been dubbed Mary Max Cinemas Logansport 5 after Hawes’ daughter, Mary Maxine. Hawes said there was much conversation about what the name should be.

“This name obviously had my vote. We’re trying to provide a modern theater experience in the community,” Hawes said. “I like the idea it is the community’s own.”

If the theater expands, the investors would name each theater individually, giving them separate identities, Hawes said.

With almost 30 years’ experience under his belt including work with the Great Escape theater chain, Dieffenbach will begin as general manager April 1. He has started the hiring process for four full-time positions and up to 28 part-time positions. He said the hiring process will be ongoing but decisions will be made by May.

A job application and links to the Facebook and Twitter account are available on the theater’s website, www.marymaxcinemas.com.

Dieffenbach said the theater will offer features that aren’t available locally. They are looking into having outdoor movie nights, opportunity to watch UFC fights and Wrestle Mania and possibly live bands and performers. Hawes said logistics will come into place later on when the theater gets closer to opening.

The five-screen movie theater will feature all digital sound and projection, high-back rocker chairs and 18- and 21-inch riser stadium seating.

Hawes said the final opening date will be determined by spring weather. Workers should have structural scale up next week and after they have a completed building envelope, they will start work on the interior.

“We just want to get the theater up and going,” Hawes said. “We’re planning to be here a long time.”
