Federal loans available to local storm victims

Uninsured property owners may be eligible for federal funds.

Low-interest federal disaster loans will be available to eligible citizens, businesses and nonprofit organizations in Cass and Carroll counties for damage caused by severe storms in November.

A press release from Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s office states the loan program is administered by the U.S. Small Business Administration, or SBA. Disaster Loan Outreach Centers will be established in Daviess, Fountain and Howard counties, which were the primary counties requested. Other counties that are eligible because they are contiguous are Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Dubois, Grant, Greene, Knox, Martin, Miami, Montgomery, Parke, Pike, Tippecanoe, Tipton, Vermillion and Warren.

Applications can be accepted at the centers or online. Loan center locations and hours will be announced when determined.

Storm cells that included two tornadoes damaged several homes and businesses in Cass County Nov. 17. Severe weather tore through much of the rest of the state and region as well.

Cass County Emergency Management Agency Director Alvin Beckman said those whose uninsured properties suffered structural damage from the storms can apply for the loans.

“At this point, it might be more in reimbursing them for funding that they had to put out in order to make repairs to houses if it was not insured,” Beckman said.

Hoosiers in eligible counties can apply by visiting one of the SBA Disaster Centers or online at disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

Business loan applications can also be downloaded from the SBA website at sba.gov. Completed applications should be returned to a Disaster Loan Outreach Center or mailed to U.S. Small Business Administration, Processing and Disbursement Center, 14925 Kingsport Road, Fort Worth, TX 76155.

Individuals and businesses can call the SBA’s customer service center at 800-659-2955 (800-877-8339 for people with speech or hearing disabilities), from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or by sending an email to disastercustomerservice@sba.gov.
