Logansport officials to address East Linden property

‘Very difficult property,’ says code enforcement officer.

LOGANSPORT — Logansport city officials are working to address a residential property on East Linden Avenue the city’s code enforcement officer suspects of having been used as an auto repair shop.

A residential property at 516 E. Linden Ave., owned by Alfonso Perez, is in violation of having siding on a privacy fence around the backyard, Logansport Code Enforcement Officer George Franklin said.

Such an addition on a privacy fence is prohibited because it impedes airflow, according to a city ordinance. Furthermore, Perez has since started to convert the entire yard into a shed by roofing over the privacy fence, Franklin added, which is also in violation of city code.

Perez had formerly stored vehicles in the yard, Franklin said, operating what he believed to be an auto repair shop out of the home.

Franklin said he has been trying to work on this issue with Perez since December of last year.

“This has proven to be a very difficult property,” Franklin said, addressing the Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety Wednesday. “He’s not the type to jump up and down, yell and scream, he seems to have done just enough to prevent us from going in and cleaning it up.”

Logansport Mayor Ted Franklin, who chairs the board of public works and safety, moved to take the issue under advisement for one week at Wednesday’s meeting, requesting time to review the matter with Logansport City Attorney Randy Head and the Logansport-Cass County Planning Department to discuss possible zoning violations.

“Hopefully we’ll have some answers by then,” Franklin said.

Perez has hired attorney Andrew Achey to represent him on this matter, who said he is awaiting a letter from Mayor Franklin detailing Perez’s alleged violations before commenting.

In other news, the board of public works and safety also:

• Approved an extension on addressing 208 N. 6th St., which had to be partially demolished in April. Logansport Building Commissioner Bill Drinkwine has been working with an engineering firm in Indianapolis to develop possible solutions for the building, which he said he will present to the owners of the building and its two adjoining properties in the near future to determine the best course of action.

• Cleared 801 Helm St., as Code Enforcement Officer George Franklin said the property’s owner, Vinad Gupta, has removed an open-air trailer with trash from the yard.
