CLEAR director adjusts to new position

Mullins continues to instruct after stepping in as CLEAR leader.

Brandy Mullins became the director of Cass Logan Educational Attainment Resource (CLEAR) in August, after former director, Tami McMahan, accepted a position as a principal in Rochester.

The Logansport native said the transition into the director position has been smooth.

“Tami [McMahan] did a fantastic job as the director, and since my previous position required that I work closely with her, it has been a very smooth transition,” Mullins said.

CLEAR started in 2010 with just 20 students studying for the GED examination.

The center offers adult basic education classes and ESL classes for people hoping to learn or improve English speaking skills. All classes are offered in the morning and the evening.

Mullins, who has been involved with CLEAR since it opened in October 2010, began as an instructional assistant in the classroom. She became testing coordinator for the center and then became instructor for the morning class.

“It has been an absolute process to learn everything,” Mullins said. “I’ve learned it’s a lot of communication between coworkers.”

In addition to being director, Mullins is still an instructor, which she describes as an enjoyable part of her job.

“It’s enjoyable to interact with the students on a daily basis and see that light bulb go off when they understand something,” Mullins said. “Those kinds of moments make it special.”

As director, she oversees the day-to-day duties at CLEAR and attends professional development meetings for the region, Mullins said.

“These meetings keep me informed on the future of adult education which is always changing,” Mullins said.

Mullins, who has lived in Logansport her entire life, has enjoyed her time with CLEAR.

“I can honestly say in my three years here, I have never woken up and not wanted to go to work,” Mullins said. “To me that’s a blessing. There are not many people who can say that.”
