Prison collects food for needy

BUNKER HILL — It’s an unusual sight, a Kroger shopping cart making its way around the prison yard, but that’s exactly what’s happening at Miami Correctional Facility. During this holiday season, the offenders at the facility are giving what little they may have to the needy in the area.

The facility began collecting food and toiletries from offenders and staff to donate to the Helping Hands Food Pantry in Peru and the Peru Salvation Army. The food drive is going on at all the Indiana Department of Correction facilities.

In the prison system, a package of Ramen Noodles is 22 cents, nearly twice the amount of the average offender wage of 12 cents an hour. The noodles and other food items can be purchased from the commissary, which is where offenders buy clothing, food and hygiene items. For the first time at the facility, offenders are being allowed to give out of their purchases to those who are in need on the outside.

The collection continues until Wednesday.

Fruit still being sold in Twelve Mile

TWELVE MILE — The Twelve Mile Lions Club is selling navel oranges, tangelos and pink grapefruit.

The price is $17 for a 20-pound box of any variety or combination.

Proceeds from the sale are targeted for Lions state projects including cancer control, eye bank and leader dog. Local students are also supported with scholarships.

Fruit will be available from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Twelve Mile Community Building or by contacting one of the members listed above.

Santa to visit Walton church

WALTON — Snacks with Santa is planned from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 20 in Walton Christian Church.

The free event will also include kids crafts, cookie decorating, story time, a photo opportunity for parents (bring own camera) and a holiday bake sale.

Historical society gets sign funding

The Cass County Visitors Bureau has granted The Cass County Historical Society $500 toward the purchase of a sign for the museum’s newest outdoor display, the Electrified Railway Track.

The reconstructed section was donated by Deichman Excavating and Transco Railway Products, using railroad ties uncovered during the resurfacing of East Broadway.

It is the CCHS Board’s intention to choose a design that will include an etching of an interurban or street car. Designs will be reviewed and approved and a dedication will take place in the spring.

Roosters schedule fundraiser this week

Two local organizations are seeking donations from the public in order to establish a fund for families who experience severe hardships.

The Cass County Rooster Charitable Foundation in partnership with the Logansport Baseball Association will be holding a roadblock to raise money to establish the fund. The roadblock will be held at Sixth and Broadway from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

A portion of this year’s proceeds will be given to the family of crash victim Derrick McQuiston and cancer patient Justin Smith to help with their financial burden.

McQuiston is a junior and three-sport athlete at Logansport High School with a 4.0 grade point average. Smith is also a junior. He is undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.
