Annual arts festival slated in September

The Cass County Arts Alliance is hosting its 13th annual arts festival, Art on the Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 13 in downtown Logansport.

The event is a showcase of the visual, performing and literary arts.

Art on the Avenue features artists from throughout the Midwest, musical and dance performances, fine arts activities for children, a professional puppet theater, a large book sale and an opportunity to meet several authors.

Food and beverage vendors will be located throughout the festival grounds.

Logansport Savings Bank is sponsoring an unveiling of a new public art piece at noon and a performance by the Beatles tribute band, the Return, at 6 p.m. at Little Turtle Waterway Plaza. Admission is $1.

Board members to be liaisons

Logansport school board members were chosen to be liaisons for local schools.

As liaisons, they will work with the different schools — meeting with administrators throughout the year and bringing back concerns to the board.

Lynne Ness will be working with Lincoln Middle School; Mike McCord will work with Logansport High School and Century Career Center; Dave McClure will be working with Franklin and Fairview elementary schools; Mike Fiscel will be the liaison for Columbia Middle School; and Cyle Dibble was named liaison for Columbia and Landis elementary schools.

City offices closed for Labor Day

The Logansport city and Logansport Municipal Utility offices will be closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day. All offices will be open for business as normal on Tuesday.

Wabash Valley Refuse will also be closed on Monday. All Logansport residential trash and recycling will be collected one day late next week.

The Logansport City Council has changed its meeting date due to the holiday and will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers.

Area high school hosting blood drive

ROYAL CENTER — The Red Cross is holding a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 5 at Pioneer High School.

Anyone who is at least 17 years of age, weighs a minimum of 110 pounds and is in good general health may be eligible to donate blood. All donors need to present positive identification.

State police issue 1,537 citations

Lafayette — Indiana State Police at the Lafayette post have released statistics for July.

Troopers issued 1,537 traffic citations and wrote 1,022 traffic warnings. They also arrested 21 alleged drunken drivers and made 96 criminal arrests.

Residents are encouraged to report suspected methamphetamine activity by calling the Indiana State Police Methamphetamine Tip Hotline at (800) 453-4756.

Area Five sponsors group for moms

Reservations are being taken for group members for Area Five Moms Support and Information Group.

Registration day is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4 at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 701 Spencer St.

This is for anyone who would like to be a part of a group that supports each other, shares information and learns while having fun. It works for moms and children just needing a break. Children learn social skills in childcare while moms are in their group.

There are no fees or charges to members. Snacks and childcare are provided during group meetings.

Senior Expo set for downtown

Senior Expo 2008 will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Downtown Senior Center, 115 S. Sixth St. in Logansport.

Included at the Expo are health screening, assisted living, home health care, retirement, long term care, leisure, exercise, local pharmacies, physical and sports therapy and other topics as well.

The event is sponsored by the Pharos-Tribune, Logansport Memorial Hospital and Downtown Senior Center.

Admission is free, and there is plenty of free parking. Food and beverages and entertainment also will be offered.

Logansport schools recognize teacher

Columbia Middle School instructor Ann Easter has been named Logansport School Corporation’s “Teacher of the Year.”

Easter is an instructor of Achieve, an alternative class providing an avenue for students to learn in a non-traditional setting. She has worked at the school for 11 years.

The award is given annually.

Easter applied for the “Teacher of the Year” on the state level last year and was chosen as a semi-finalist.

Easter organizes numerous activities for students each year, including a dog sledding trip to Michigan that she started two years ago.

Shriners plan frolic, parade

The Logansport Shrine Club — the oldest Shrine Club in Indiana — is having a frolic/parade on Sept. 6 in Logansport.

The parade starts at 1 p.m. at 15th and Market streets. The parade will go west on Market to Fourth Street, then north on Fourth to the Logansport Shrine Club at 415 High St.

Many motorized Shrine units from around the state and other neighboring states will be there to entertain the public.

At the Shrine Club there will be an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 6 to 11 a.m. that is open to the public. The cost is $5 a person.

After the parade there will be food, fun, door prizes and parade awards will be held at 3 p.m. These events will all be at the Logansport Shrine Club and all open to the public.

Carousel plans final weekend

The Dentzel Carousel at Riverside Park will be open to the public for one last weekend this summer.

The carousel will be open from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Monday.

Elwood resident held in break-in

PERU — An Elwood resident has been arrested on charges of residential burglary and arson.

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation on Tuesday for the burglary and arson at the residence of George S. Gardineer, located at 6146E 100S, Peru, according to a news release from the Miami County Sheriff’s Department.

George C. Gardineer, 22, Elwood, was arrested on Wednesday, according to the news release.

At the time of the news release, Gardineer was held in the Miami County Jail on $40,000 bond.

Grissom practices disaster readiness

A large plume of white smoke rose from the flight line at Grissom Joint Air Reserve Base Thursday morning after a civilian DC-8 aircraft collided with a military KC-135 Stratotanker from the 434th Airfueling Wing.

The event, which looked real from a distance, actually was part of an ongoing disaster response training program at the base, Lt. Col. Gary Lockard said.

As part of Thursday’s training scenario, Grissom first responders and fire trucks from the Grissom Fire Department raced to the flight deck where they found the two planes had collided as they were getting ready to take off.
