Fourth of July fireworks show must go on

Logansport Parks and Jaycees host annual display tonight

Despite poor weather conditions on the Fourth of July, the Logansport Parks and Recreation Department decided the annual fireworks show must still go on.

“It is a tradition and I think the community plans on it and looks forward to it each year,” Parks Administrator Jan Fawley said.

The Logansport Jaycees and the Parks Department will shoot off the annual Fourth of July Fireworks display starting at 9:30 p.m. today from the Steinman Field area at Fairview Park.

The event is free and everyone is encouraged to attend. The show is scheduled to run for 19 minutes.

Fawley said the parks department has teamed up with the Jaycees for a number of years to put the fireworks show together.

“It does help cut our costs in terms of fireworks,” she said. “It also makes a good recruiting tool for the Jaycees as well. I just like to partner with people to do something special like this.”

Something new will be added to the show. Fawley said the fireworks contractor offered the idea of coordinating music to the show.

“I thought it sounded neat,” she said.

Fawley hopes the music will help put a new spin on the entire show.

Dan Keister, general manager at Mid-America Radio group of Logansport, thought it was a good idea for Mix 102 to become involved.

“I thought it would be great exposure for Mix 102,” he said. “I hope it will enhance it.”

The local radio station will be playing a 19-minute CD provided by Night Magic Inc., which is the company in charge of the display.

The company will call the radio station when it is ready to start the show. Keister said eight to 10 different songs by various artists will be played during that time period and will coordinate to the show.

Those in attendance will be able to listen and view the fireworks from their vehicles or sit on the bleacher and listen to the music over the field’s loud speaker system.

Fawley felt it was important to reschedule the event.

“I feel July Fourth was a little incomplete without them,” she said. “We are going to complete the cycle for everyone.”
