Juvenile facility opens new unit
The Logansport Juvenile Correctional Facility recently opened its new Purposeful Living Units Serve, or P.L.U.S.
The 16-week, voluntary program will offer additional treatment options to the student population of the facility. It is designed to offer students an alternative track to promote and enhance their individual spiritual and character needs for successful re-entry into society.
A key part of the program component is to have members of the community serve as mentors to these students within the correctional setting. Those who are willing to become mentors will work hand in hand with the treatment staff assigned to the unit.
For additional information on the program, contact program director Mark Harmon at (574) 753-7571, Ext. 3020. Volunteer mentoring positions are available.
Group announces survey results
WALTON — Using a grant from the Cass County Solid Waste District, members of the Walton Main Street organization recently surveyed more than half of the homes in Walton on the issue of recycling.
The survey showed that 42 percent of the people living in Walton at the time of the survey did recycle. Ninety-six percent said they would recycle more if it were more convenient to do so. Four percent indicated they were not interested in recycling.
Sixty-one percent of the people surveyed felt the town should provide curbside recycling, and 37 percent would be content with a bin where they could take materials. Ninety-eight percent of the people surveyed felt the town should provide some means of recycling.
Before 2006, Walton had curbside recycling which was paid for by a grant from the solid waste district. The district spent almost $100,000 over a decade to provide recycling for Walton.
