With the drastic rise in temperatures this week, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management has declared today an Air Quality Action Day in Carroll County and other areas around the state.
The denotation, which is an extension of a warning from earlier in the week, refers to the increase in ground-level ozone. This type of ozone forms when sunlight and hot weather bake vehicle exhaust, factory emissions and gasoline vapors and can cause irritation to the respiratory system including coughing and difficulty breathing.
Prolonged exposure to high ozone levels may increase the chance of these symptoms and could create unhealthy conditions for sensitive groups. IDEM suggests that children, the elderly and anyone with heart or lung problems reduce or avoid exertion or heavy work outdoors.
Until the Air Quality Action Day forecast expires, those groups should schedule outdoor activities during the early morning or late evening hours whenever possible to reduce exposure to ground-level ozone.

Reducing ground-level ozone
These tips can improve air quality by reducing ground-level ozone levels on Air Quality Action Days.
• Walk, bike, carpool or use public transportation
• Avoid using the drive-through and combine errands into one trip
• Avoid using gas-powered lawn equipment
• Turn off your engine when idling for more than 30 seconds
• Conserve energy by turning off lights or turning down the air conditioner
