Infant ejected in Logansport crash

From Staff Reports

An infant was thrown from a vehicle as a result of a two-vehicle crash that occurred in Logansport Sunday evening.

At 5:45 p.m., police were dispatched to the intersection of U.S. 24 and Ind. 435 in response to a personal-injury accident. Upon arrival, they found John Alma, a child less than a year old, lying the roadway in a child restraint seat, according to the accident report. Alma had sustained non-incapacitating injuries to his entire body, police say. He was one of five injured in the crash.

The accident happened as a vehicle driven by 78-year-old Betty J. Winnings of Peru pulled into the intersection and struck a vehicle driven by 29-year-old Ashley Alma of Royal Center in the rear passenger-side. The impact caused the vehicle to spin and then flip several times.

One of Ashley’s passengers, 32-year-old Keith D. Alma of Royal Center, had to be freed from the wreckage by Logansport firefighters. He had severe bleeding from the head. A 4-year-old, Lincoln Alma, sustained an arm injury. Ashley complained of chest pain.

All four occupants were taken to Logansport Memorial Hospital, where officials declined to provide condition reports.

Winnings, who sustained a leg injury, reportedly told police she did not see Alma’s vehicle.
