Deputy marshal injured in crash

Other driver cited for driving while suspended.

From Staff Reports

MONON — A Monon deputy marshal was injured Monday night after he crashed his squad car while pursuing a stolen vehicle.

At about 9:17 p.m., 37-year-old Deputy Marshal Douglas A. Lee of Monticello was enroute to assist the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department in pursuit of a stolen car on U.S. 421 north of 500N in White County.

Lee, driving a white 2004 Ford Crown Victoria police vehicle with emergency lights and siren activated, was south bound when he attempted to pass a blue 2000 Ford Taurus driven by 27-year-old Jennifer M. Haygood of Monon.

Haygood turned her Taurus left in front of Lee’s police cruiser, according to a news release. Lee was able to miss the Taurus but in doing so left the roadway striking a NIPSCO utility pole and skidded across the grassy ditch where he came to rest.

Lee was transported to White County Hospital in Monticello, where he was treated for possible neck and head injuries. Haygood was not injured.

Indiana State Police Probationary Trooper Jerrad Foutch investigated the crash. Foutch cited Haygood for driving while suspended and no insurance when required.

Assisting Foutch at the scene was Probationary Trooper Kyle Herron, Sgt. Kim Riley, Monon Marshal Roger Young, Monon Fire and Rescue and Monticello Ambulance.

The investigation is ongoing.
