Award-winning Mexican artist coming to Logansport

by Melissa Soria
Pharos-Tribune staff writer

The Cass County Community Foundation is hosting a visit to Logansport by world-renowned artist Lucia Maya.

Maya, who lives in Guadalajara, Mexico, will be arriving in Logansport on May 14 when she is scheduled to visit art classes at Columbia Elementary School.

On May 15, she will be at Logansport High School visiting art students. That night, the public is invited to a reception and exhibition of her work from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Logansport Art Association.

Maya is also tentatively scheduled to visit the Dentzel Carousel, Peak Community Services, Cole Clothing Museum and the Logansport Mall during her stay.

Maya was born on the island of Santa Catalina in California, but lived in Mexico since she was 4. She has been a prolific artist since her first exhibit in 1975.

Her influences include Carringtonian and Jungian dream structuring.

She has exhibited her work around the world and many pieces are held in collections of the Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, Calif.; the Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City; and the Instituto de Cultural Puertorriqueno, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Her work has been displayed in Canada, Santa Domingo, Thailand and India, and she has been recognized in Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Deanna Crispen, the community foundation’s executive director, met Maya while studying in Mexico in 2002, and the two have stayed in touch.

“Lucia continues to capture the human spirit and her work provides stimulation that continues to be symbolic, personal and yet universal,” she said.

The Logansport Art Association will display Maya’s work through the month of May.

For more information about her visit, contact the community foundation at (574) 722-2200.
