WALTON — A local man was airlifted from the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Ind. 218 some three miles east of Walton on Tuesday.
At about 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, officers from the Indiana State Police, Miami County Sheriff’s Department and Cass County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident on Ind. 218 at 600S.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Bart Stouffer revealed that 60-year-old Robert Allen Jr. of Peru was driving a 2006 Dodge pickup truck eastbound on 600S when it struck a westbound 2007 Dodge pickup truck driven by 57-year-old Larry McCarter of Walton.
McCarter suffered a back injury and was flown from the scene by Life Line Helicopter to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. Allen suffered an elbow injury and was taken by ambulance to Logansport Memorial Hospital.
McCarter was listed in stable condition in the intensive care unit this morning, according to a hospital representative. Information on Allen’s condition was not available because of a Logansport Memorial Hospital policy prohibiting release of patient information to the media.
“Seat belt use by both drivers reduced the severity of their injuries,” Stouffer said in a news release. “This was a high-impact crash and injuries would have been more severe if not for the proper use of the safety restraints.”
Master Trooper Ron Whitney and the Grissom Air Reserve Base Fire Department assisted at the scene.
