PERU — A mother found herself in jail this week after allegedly slapping her child in the face.

On Wednesday afternoon, personnel from the Division of Family and Children contacted a detective with the Miami County Sheriff’s Department to initiate an investigation into a child abuse complaint involving a 9-year-old child.

Based on information discovered by the detective, the child’s mother, 27-year-old Amanda Jo Abbott of Peru, was arrested on a class D felony charge of bodily injury to a child less than 14 and booked into the Miami County Jail under a $5,000 bond.

Police say that on either Monday or Tuesday, Abbott struck her child in the face with her hand, leaving visible injuries. If convicted, Abbott faces up to three years in prison.

Singers perform a medley of songs and are needed from 9 a.m. to late afternoon.

For more information or to volunteer, call the CCCF office at (574) 722-2200 or e-mail jgraybeal@casscountycf.org.
