PUBLIC FORUM: Proud to be in power agency

— I am the utility manager at Tipton Municipal Utilities, a member of the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA). I have read and heard about some of the negative press being generated in Logansport about IMPA and its member cities and towns. As one of those members, I’d like to share my perspective.

IMPA is a joint action agency that brings together 59 cities and towns from across the state of Indiana to work as a team to ensure that our communities are receiving a stable, low-cost, reliable and environmentally responsible power supply. Every member community of IMPA has a voting seat at IMPA’s Board of Commissioners and actively directs the major decisions of the agency, including those regarding operations or investment in generations asserts. Quite frankly, we are very proud of how successful we have been as a result of working together for 30 years.

In fact, IMPA has some of the lowest wholesale rates in the state of Indiana. And IMPA member communities on average have residential rates that are approximately 10 percent lower that Indiana’s average investor-owned utilities’ residential rates. The concept of “strength in numbers” has served us well, as IMPA communities have worked together through IMPA to address regulatory, legislative and economic development initiates and together, have proven to be a strong force in accomplishing our mutual goals.

Specifically in my community of Tipton, IMPA has gone above and beyond to help us. Several years ago, a major industrial company expressed interested in locating to Tipton. At the time, Tipton did not have adequate transmission to serve this company’s load. IMPA is a co-owner of the Duke Energy Indiana transmission system (typically called the Joint Transmission System or JTS). IMPA worked with Duke and the prospective company on our behalf to construct the additional transmission lines and facilities. This is but one example of the many benefits of IMPA membership.

Thank you for the opportunity to share a little about our experience with IMPA

David L. Reep, Tipton
