PUBLIC FORUM: Letters from Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Let’s apply common senseto power plant decision

OK, I have researched and read everything I could find on this new way of producing energy; I can’t say I understood all that I read, but enough to get the gist of the process. I also read all the pro and con public forums that have devolved into personal attacks. I still am not dead sure what is the right thing for Logansport.

However, this is such an important thing that will affect our community for many years to come, isn’t it time we start to use some common sense. On one side we have a new technology that may or may not work as is claimed. On the other we have natural gas that is in abundance and will be for years to come.

I may be over-simplifying this, but it seems to me that it would be most unwise to buy this pig-in-a-poke when we have something that is tried and true. Whatever the outcome, we must not let our community be torn apart over this.

Still waiting on answersto questions asked in March

Congratulations to Pulaski/White Rural Telephone Cooperative for winning the Advancing Technology Award from the Indiana Telecommunications Association. One has to wonder, though, if the ITA is aware that so many of the members of this rural telephone cooperative are still left with 20th century technology, i.e., DSL as its only Internet option, and no chance to bundle Internet, telephone and television, and that there is no option for in the foreseeable future for this to be remedied?

It is admirable that PWRTC was able to take fiber optic cable to the hospitals in Winamac and Monticello. However, those areas already had access to that technology. The concerns of the members – those of us left without 21st century options – continue to revolve around the expense of the new building and how that may compare to the expense of updating our technology. And the need for the new building. And how that new building will help us, the members. And how giving the more urban areas of our communities access to options they already have available to them will help us, the members, to gain access to that technology.

In March, at the annual membership meeting, members asked questions of PWRTC, and we were promised answers. It is now July, and we have yet to see a newsletter with answers to the questions asked. So, I guess I’m asking again.
