Better Health for Cass County is a group of community professionals providing coordination and opportunities to improve the health and well-being of Cass County Residents. From this main group, five different task forces have been developed to address specific health concerns for the community — obesity, tobacco cessation, teen pregnancy, mental health and health care cost containment.

The Obesity Task Force has brought together community resources for a free family fun event called Community Fit Day. Our desire and passion is for our community residents to be healthy and active. We want the children, teens, adults and seniors of Cass County to have the opportunity to learn about being healthy, choose to be healthy and take part in making a change.

Community Fit Day will be take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 22, at Ivy Tech State College. Community vendors and resources will have fun activities available for both children and adults. Some examples are Zumba demos, Yoga class, obstacle course, water safety instructions, bike races, My Plate demos and blood pressure checks. Participants will have the opportunity to see the ACTS Community Gardens at Ivy Tech. Door prizes will be awarded at the end of the day.

Taking Steps Community Walking Program will kick off on the same day at the event. Taking Steps is a five-week walking program for adults and kids beginning June 22 and ending July 27. The first 200 registrants will receive a free pedometer with their information for the program. As a participant, you will track and record the steps you take each day. Participants will have the opportunity to report their steps electronically or by paper tracking. Prizes will be awarded along the way and at the end.

I hope that many Cass County residents will come and enjoy the fun June 22. This is a wonderful opportunity to receive free information, learn about our community, and pick up a great health tip or two along the way.
