PUBLIC FORUM: Task force wants to get community fit

Task force wantsto get community fit

Each year throughout our community we come together to celebrate a variety of things, differing from a jazz festival, downtown cleanup, Dancing with Our Stars, and Taste of Cass County — just to name a few. All of those things better our community in different ways.

The Obesity Task Force of Cass County, a division of the Better Health for Cass County, has put together a program to help better our community in a different, individual way. On June 22, we want to project the message of a healthier lifestyle. Not only do we want to teach and mentor adults about healthier living, but also our children as they are the future for Logansport.

The Community Fit day is a perfect way to do that. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. More than one-third of U.S. adults [35.7 percent] are obese.”

In 2011, Indiana was at a 30 percent prevalence rate in adults, making us one of the most obese states in the country. Obesity poses an increased risk on our organs by raising the risk of heart disease, strokes, diabetes, as well as cancer. The Obesity Task Force wants to make aware the risks involved in a non-healthy lifestyle.

All of this will be taking place from 9 a.m. to noon June 22 at Ivy Tech. Our Community Fit day will give the community an opportunity to come and learn about healthier cooking options demonstrated by two professional chefs. We will also be having a Zumba and yoga demonstration.

Among the cooking and exercise demonstrations, there is a new program sweeping the county called the ACTS Community Gardens program that will teach and educate about the benefits and rewards of planting a garden not only for our community, but also to encourage those to plant their own as well. We are coming together with the Farmer’s Market to help encourage our community to support local and reap the benefits of our local farmers. We will have games, door prizes and will be providing a free shuttle from Ivy Tech to the Farmers Market. This is a free, family event. What a better way to spend a Saturday than with our families learning about a healthier way to live our lives.
