Free trade fuels greed of America’s corporations

So another Free Trade Agreement is in the works. The big trouble with Free Trade Agreements is they only profit the corporations, because they are never in our favor. They lose more American jobs.

I lost mine to NAFTA several years ago! What more can the corporations want? Our blood? We are told to buy American? How? We’re not allowed to make anything these days.

Also, to help the corporations out, we privatize everything. Stop privation now. If you live in the county, you now have to pay for a paved road along your property, unused land even if not accessible. Thanks state-run Congress. You weren’t allowed to raise property taxes that much so you added other things.

Spelling a successful spelling bee fundraiser

Literacy Volunteers of Cass County recently held its 22nd annual Spelling Bee with great success. What fun we had and what a great opportunity to support the work being done locally by LVCC.

A big thank you goes to the teams and sponsors who participated in and sponsored the spelling bee. The winning teams were Landis Elementary, first place; Ivy Tech, second place; and Pioneer School Corp., third place. The Spirit Award went to Logansport Memorial Hospital.

We very much appreciate their support as well as the many donations received from other groups and individuals.

Also, I want to thank our vice president, Dave Miller, who very ably organized the whole event.

The funds raised will help individuals with GED preparation, improving basic reading and writing skills and assistance with learning English as a new language. We do this by matching adult students with volunteer tutors who work together at a time and place that is convenient for both.

We support these efforts with an ever-expanding library of texts and materials.
