March set aside for disability awareness
In 1987, then-President Ronald Reagan signed into legislation designating March as “Disability Awareness Month.” Three years later, in 1990, the American Disabilities Act was passed and the two have had dramatic positive impact on the lives of those living with disabilities.
During the next 27 years expectations and capabilities in the work place have shifted for those with developmental disabilities. Statistics indicate that roughly 19 percent of Indiana’s adult and child population are affected by some form of disability.
Each March, Disability Awareness Month is celebrated throughout Indiana. And given that adults and children with disabilities represent slightly more than 19 percent of Indiana’s population, disability awareness is important for all of us. Peak Community Services is joining with Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities to increase awareness and promote independence, integration and inclusion of all people with disabilities all month long.
Logansport Savings Bank joined Peak Community Services for a poster contest for third graders in Cass County. The winning poster will receive a Kindle Fire.
Tri Kappa, Mid America Radio and Cass County Community Foundation’s “Dial a Story” is featuring a story about disabilities. It can be accessed by dialing 574-737-8679.
Beta Gamma Zeta a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa’s honor society along with Peak Community Services are recruiting businesses and organizations for an accessibility survey that will be conducted in early April. Those that are considering renovations may want to assure that they can meet ADA standards.
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will be hosting their annual Saint Patrick’s Day Party for clients at Peak Community Services this month and a Client Appreciation Luncheon with a Disability Awareness Proclamation by the Cass County Commissioners will be held March 21.
The theme for 2014 is “Dream to Dare” and includes a poster with the following poem: When sight is measured by ones vision of the future; when mobility is defined as putting words into action; when it takes nothing special to meet special needs; then we will transcend the community of our Dreams.
