PUBLIC FORUM: Organization mourns a visionary's passing

---- — Organization mournsa visionary’s passing

We at Literacy Volunteers of Cass County were recently saddened by the passing of our founder, Barbara Bevelhimer, a great visionary and the driving force locally behind adult literacy and adult education in general.

Barbara saw a need for continuing education in Cass County and started the adult education program that we know today as CLEAR. She realized that even that was not enough for some learners and in the late ‘70s she organized a group of volunteers under the auspices of what was known at that time as Literacy Volunteers of America in Cass County.

In 2001, she received a 20-year pin from them in recognition of her efforts. In 2010, LVCC presented her a certificate of appreciation. Thanks to her efforts and those of the volunteers who followed her, LVCC is still a viable organization in the community. We remember her with gratitude and fondness.

Call us at 574-355-0986 if you would like to help continue her legacy.
