---- — Peru mayor sendsholiday wishes to all

The holiday season is upon us. It seems that it starts earlier with each passing year. Many of us are busy trying to find the perfect gifts for those we love. Oftentimes we can’t decide on what to buy and settle on giving them a gift card. That is definitely one gift that won’t be returned the day after Christmas. But there is one gift we can give that can last a lifetime; the gift of ourselves.

We all lead hectic lives at times and forget to enjoy the great gifts of family and friends that God has given us. Let us all pledge that we will spend more quality time with our families and caring for our friends and neighbors. Not all gifts need to have a monetary value. Giving of our time is a valuable gift. And these acts of kindness would be the gift that keeps on giving.

We can also look for individuals who, unfortunately, do not find the holiday season to be a joyous occasion. Perhaps they are alone or they are struggling to make ends meet. The holidays, to them, causes more stress than joy. Something as simple as spending some time with them and letting them know you care or as special as taking them to dinner and buying a gift will mean a lot to them. Either way you are letting them know they are not alone and that you are there and you care. In this way, you are brightening their holiday spirit and showing them the true meaning of Christmas. No matter where we are in our lives, or our finances, we have the ability to change the lives of others, give them hope and make their wishes come true. It is up to us to make that change. Please join me in making change begin.

On behalf of my family and the city of Peru, I want to wish all of you a joyous holiday and a new year filled with hope, happiness and good faith.

May God bless you all. Merry Christmas
