PUBLIC FORUM: Budgets reflect the nation’s priorities

To Sen. Joe Donnelly and Rep. Todd Rokita:

According to the Friends Committee on National Legislation, 37 cents of every dollar we pay in federal income taxes goes to pay for current and past wars. At the same time, education, diplomacy, and help to the nearly 100 million people living in poverty in this country get only pennies on every dollar. This certainly does not reflect my priorities.

Right now, the Pentagon is telling you and all members of Congress that cutting into their projected spending will be catastrophic for national security. With so much of our tax dollars already going to military projects, I think that it would be a catastrophe not to reshape our country’s budget to reflect our true priorities as a nation.

Sir, what are your priorities? One of mine is to build a just world peace. We cannot do this by sending our brave men and women and unmanned bombs to kill. Nor can a just world result from training and building up foreign militias to kill their own (our) brothers and sisters, as in Columbus, Ga. The current federal policy results in more wars in more regions of the planet and more dangers for us Americans. I, personally, certainly do not feel more “secure” in this country as a result of our foreign policy. You are aware of the well-known truth about the absurdity of trying to achieve different results through the same self-defeating methods.

What are your perspectives and hopes, Mr. Donnelly and Mr. Rokita?
