Group plans event for the love of money

Money is something we are generally acquainted with on a daily basis. If we are not earning it or spending it, then we are wishing we had more of it.

Coins and dollar bills are also very collectible.

There is a world of coin collecting that has been a part of Logansport since 1954, making this its 55th year.

“A few memberships still date back to the late 50s,” said Dave Colford, a representative of the Logansport Coin Club. “The club currently has over 30 active members.”

One of its activities each year is an annual coin show. This year’s event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Sunday at the Ramada Inn, 3550 E. Market St. in Logansport. Admission is free.

“There will be 30 dealer tables to buy and sell coins, currency, tokens and related items. The club will have an exhibit of one cent coins dating from the 1790s to the current Lincoln commemorative cents,” said Colford. “Club members also will be available to identify coin and currency items the public may have questions about,” he added.

The club holds a spring show in Kokomo as well, which will be April 18, 2010, at the Kokomo Event Center.

The Logansport Coin Club meets at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month in the Logansport Cass County Public Library.

“Meetings generally consist of a business session, trivia, a variety of programs and a small auction,” said Colford. “Programs can be presented by club members, special guest speakers or on a DVD. In addition, we participate in an annual program exchange with the Indianapolis and Marion coin clubs.”

He said visitors to the show or club meetings would find an array of collectibles.

“While U.S. coins are the backbone of the hobby, it also includes everything from state quarters to coins of the American colonies; currency (including some from Logansport); medals and tokens; unusual forms of money; and world coins that date from modern euros to biblical times and ancient empires,” Colford said.

As someone who recently started sharing a collection with my dad, it’s been interesting delving into this world of coin collecting. I would encourage the public to check out the show on Sunday, especially those who are new to this hobby or are thinking about getting involved as an investment. Individuals already involved can visit with others who have expertise in this field.

Concluding with the famous quote that was mentioned throughout the “Jerry Maguire” movie, “Show me the money.” With over 50 years under their belts, members of this group really do know how to do just that!
