REMC to send six students to camp

PERU — Miami-Cass REMC is sponsoring six local students to attend an annual electric camp known as Touchstone Energy Camp. The camp will be held June 3-6 at the YMCA Camp Tecumseh site in Brookston.

This year marks the seventh year of Touchstone Energy Camp. Miami-Cass REMC has sponsored two to six students each year. Over 120 youth from all over the state of Indiana are slated to attend this year, an all time high for the camp. Approximately 60 percent are female and 40 percent are male this year. Approximately 50 camp chaperones will be on duty and are employees of many of Indiana’s electric cooperatives.

Sixth-grade boys and girls were eligible to attend and were selected via an application process earlier this year by the local electric cooperative to participate in the three-day program. The students’ agenda will combine traditional outdoor camp activities with environmental education, electrical safety practices, electricity generation and distribution processes, and cooperative business education.

The six attendees selected by Miami-Cass REMC are Jonathan Phillips, Royal Center, a Pioneer Elementary School student; Seth Rance, Logansport, a Pioneer Elementary School student; Cory Duff, Macy, a North Miami Elementary School student; Emily Vance, Denver, a North Miami Elementary School student; Ruby “Christy” Hamrick, Miami, a Maconaquah Middle School student; and Sarah Clements, Lucerne, a home school student.

The Touchstone Energy Camp program was developed by a committee of electric cooperative employees from around the state of Indiana, and is funded in part by Indiana’s Rural Electric Cooperatives, Touchstone Energy cooperatives and local sponsors.
