Cass County student wins AIC essay contest

The Association of Indiana Counties (AIC) and Star Financial Bank named Jenna Graves of Fairview Elementary as the National County Government Week essay contest winner for the AIC’s Northwest District.

Graves’ essay was chosen over entries from other third graders across the district. One winner is chosen in each of the AIC’s six districts.

This year’s theme was “Protecting Children.” Essays were judged on how well students communicated the county’s role in protecting kids.

Her essay follows:

“Protecting Our Children”

Do you know how unsafe some communities are? Well, sometimes Logansport isn’t very safe! You have to protect your children and teach them better things!

It is important to protect children so they don’t get hurt. It’s also important to protect children so they stay safe. At parks, every once in a while policemen drive by to make sure that everything goes okay.

Cass County provides us with the Memorial Hospital in case kids get sick. Logansport has crossing guards for the roads, and we also have walk and stop signs. Our playgrounds are safe, but you have to watch your child. You can’t just leave them there! We have school, which is another safe environment where children learn. Sometimes firemen come and show the kids things as if there was a fire.

If you teach your children good things, it will make our community safer! If you teach your children good things, they won’t do as bad things! We’ll just have a very safe community.

Watch out for things that go wrong and don’t let your children go outside without someone watching them! Just remember, if you teach your children good things, they’ll be better than ever!
